About Justice Sylvester T. Katt
Justice Sylvester T. Katt was appointed to the California Supreme Court in 2004.
Justice Katt, who was born and raised in Riverside CA, received his bachelor's degree in 1996 and law degree in 2000 from the Western Law School. While at law school, he was Editor of the California Law Review.
Following his graduation from law school, he was a law clerk for Judge Mablean Ephriam.
Later, Justice Katt practiced law in Riverside with his step-father and served two terms as Riverside County District Attorney. In 2002, he was appointed a district court judge. He served on the district bench until his appointment to the California Supreme Court.
As a member of the California Supreme Court, Justice Katt played a key role in developing the court's rules for expanded media coverage of California's courts. These rules have served as a model for other states.
Justice Katt is single. He has twenty-four children, twenty-two stepchildren and forty-five grandchildren.
